The Department of Speech-Language-Hearing: Sciences and Disorders at the University of Kansas seeks to hire an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor with expertise in language, language disorders, and language development. Candidates focused on bilingualism/multilingualism and/or cultural/linguistic diversity and under-representation in these language areas are encouraged to apply. The position is expected to begin as early as August 18, 2022. The successful candidate will conduct research leading to publications and external funding; teach courses and mentor students in his/her specialty; perform academic advising responsibilities; and engage in departmental, College, University, and national service.

Job Description

  1. 40% Research: Develop, activate, and sustain a significant research program in their field leading to scholarly activity, publications, scholarly presentations, and competitively awarded research funds.
  2. 40% Teaching: Teach courses, mentor research, and advise students at the undergraduate and graduate level. Departmental teaching may range from traditional lecture courses, to small group laboratory sections, to professional seminars, and to individual research instruction. The typical teaching load is three courses per academic year (e.g., 2-1) but this can vary by appointment type (e.g., joint appointments, department leadership roles and external research funding commitments).  All teaching must be evaluated by students. Faculty are expected to hold regular office hours.
  3. 20% Service: Serve on departmental, College, and University committees and actively contribute to the workings of the university community. Engage in professional service (e.g., refereeing, editing, serving on committees or as an officer/leader in national organizations, etc.). Attend department meetings and contribute to departmental projects as assigned by the department chair.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) letter of application describing experience and accomplishments; (2) record of productivity in research, teaching, service as noted in CV; (3) research statement and supplemental materials (e.g., representative publications); (4) teaching statement and supplemental materials (e.g., teaching portfolio, sample syllabus, peer evaluations, student evaluations); (5) information provided from three professional references.

  1. Expertise in language, language disorders, and language development that complement those of existing faculty,
  2. D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders, or a related discipline, is expected by start date of appointment;

For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor: (1) potential to establish an independent programmatic line of research that includes publications and external funding; (2) potential to effectively teach courses and mentor students; (3) willingness to participate in local and national service.

For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure: (1) an established independent programmatic line of research that includes a record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and external funding; (2) growth in teaching and mentoring that culminates in effective teaching and mentoring; (3) record of regular local and/or national service participation; (4) meet University criteria for tenured Associate Professor.

For appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure: (1) a nationally recognized program of research that includes a sustained record of publication and external funding; (2) established record of effective teaching and mentoring; (3) sustained record of local and national service contributions, including leadership roles; (4) meet University criteria for tenured Full Professor.
