The Department of Philosophy and the Department of Cognitive and Psychological Sciences (CoPsy) at Brown University seek to make an appointment for a Postdoctoral Research Associate specializing in the Philosophy of Mind or the Philosophy of Cognitive Science, broadly construed. The area of competence is open.

The position begins July 1, 2026 for a duration of two years. The appointee for this position is expected to teach two cross-listed courses per academic year. A conference or workshop on a topic of interest to both departments may be substituted for one course in the second year, with the approval of both departments. Where appropriate, and depending on research fit, the postdoctoral research associate may also participate in the research activities of a CoPsy faculty member (e.g., lab meetings, collaborative projects, or reading groups).

Applicants should have their Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely related field. They must have their Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2026 and it must have been awarded within the last three years. Recipients of a Ph.D. from Brown University are ineligible. Postdoctoral Research Associates are employed with standard benefits and a $2,000 per year reimbursable research fund. Scholars from outside the United States are appointed under J-1 visas (exchange visitors status) only.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, CV, writing sample, evidence of teaching ability (e.g., teaching evaluations and/or a statement of teaching philosophy), and three confidential letters of recommendation. The cover letter should discuss the research the candidate proposes to conduct during the term of the appointment and outline two cross-listed courses they propose to teach.

The Departments of Philosophy and Cognitive and Psychological Sciences are committed to diversity and inclusion. Accordingly, the departments are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity and inclusion through teaching and scholarship. Applicants should include a statement in the cover letter concerning their commitment to teaching and working in a diverse and inclusive environment.

Applications should be submitted on-line to Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/182989. The review of applications will begin on April 1, 2026. To assure full consideration applicants should submit their materials by that date.
